Clear Boundaries

Note 07 · Practice

Leave a connection check easy to repeat

A short record of the question, conditions and result is usually more reusable than a large collection of unexplained output.

Define a small success

Before starting, say what would count as a useful result: a particular page arrives, a name resolves to an expected address, or a transfer completes within a stated bound. Avoid combining several questions into a single pass or fail label.

A clear stopping point reduces unnecessary retries and makes a failed attempt easier to describe to someone else.

Write down the conditions

Keep the requested name, the time, the kind of request and the network context that matters to the question. There is no need to record private account data in a shared note. Summarise sensitive details by role rather than copying them.

If a condition changes, treat the next result as a new observation. A clean comparison is more valuable than a long sequence in which the inputs are no longer known.

End with the next useful question

State what the check demonstrated and what it left open. If the expected result repeated, stop. If it did not, choose the smallest next check that could separate two plausible explanations. This makes the record useful even when the original question remains partly unanswered.
